Things I Never Understood

Why nice, trying-to-be reporter neutral Mara Liasson allows herself to be set up as the "liberal" on FoxNews panels. She sucks at presenting the liberal case, because she thinks of herself as a reporter who doesn't take sides but being on Fox News and being on those panels hurts her credibility as a reporter

So why does she do it?

Why the Apology?

What so interesting about this episode isn't that The Daily Show nailed Sean Hannity. That's what they do. What's interesting is that Hannity backed down and appologized, even if it was a half-ass effort. Hannity is just a dick in everything he says, isn't he?

I figure, FoxNew's mission is to be an inflitrator in the fourth estate. It has to look like a real news organization, otherwise it can't function. So if its cautgh doing something so blatant, like using protest fotage from the another day, that completely destroys that thin illution of a real new org, it has to walk it back. Only enough to keep its cover intact.

The truly amazing thing is how quickly and effortlessly these guys switched modes. One day criticising the President is unthinkable, the next day it's required. Should Sarah Palin beat Obama in 2012, every single one of these guys will once again claim that protest is American and to criticise the President in a time of war is treason.

100 Days of Fox

Chief Craigorian Chant Media Analysis Roy sends in this review of the first 100 days through the eyes of Fox News.

There's no better way to understand what Fox News is and what they do when you see it this way. The amazing thing is, this is just the beginning. Obama has a lot more to do. Where is Fox going to go with its rhetoric in the months, ney years to come?

How Will They Know?

News from FoxNews:

“Hannity & Colmes,” the longest-running program on the Fox News Channel, will soon be without Colmes.

Alan Colmes, 58, the liberal half of the 9 p.m. show, will leave his daily hosting duties at the end of the year, the network announced Monday.

While the network remained quiet about its plans for the political debate program, two people close to the network said that Sean Hannity, 46, Mr. Colmes’s conservative counterpart for the last 12 years, would become the sole host of the hour.

No really, how is this different?

Behind the Scenes

Juicy behind the scenes gossip about the Bill O'Reilly-Keith Olbermann feud. Apparently, this was discussed at the highest levels by the heads of their respective media bosses. Is this really the way this stuff works?

History of Fox

The Daily Show does it well.

Its really going to fun to watch FoxNews adapt to the new regime in 2009. Of watching a whole network regain it ability to be critical of an Administration again. Oh and if Democrats continue to boycott as they continue to gain power, see what happens when no one who can do anything in the US Government will go on their network. Fox will consist of nothing but former Republican office holders, talking about what they would do if they didn't just get their ass handed to them by the American electorate. Riveting stuff.

Fight!

Bill O'Reilly got into a shoving match with an Obama staffer. John Dickerson has a good write-up. My particular favorite moment is when Bill-O get heckled with shouts of "falafel."

I swear, if it had come down to fisticuffs and we got a photo or video of Bill-O getting punched by an Obama staffer, it would be worth 5% in every Democratic Primary held this year.

UPDATE: Keith Olbermann gives the incident the coverage it deserves, with a Puppet Theatre recreation. Sweet.

Fox News Makes You Dumb

And The Daily Show makes you smart. Proven scientific fact. Let us comence with the smug liberal superiority.

To keep that theme going, check out Bill Maher's tribute to The Elite:

I don't get it: In other fields -- outside of government -- elite is a good thing, like an elite fighting force. Tiger Woods is an elite golfer. If I need brain surgery, I'd like an elite doctor. But in politics, elite is bad -- the elite aren't down-to-earth and accessible like you and me and President Shit-for-Brains. But when the anti-elite crowd demonizes the elite, what they're actually doing is embracing incompetence. Now, I know what you're thinking: That doesn't sound like our president -- ignoring intelligence.
