The latest economic data shows that in the last quarter of 2008, the final three months of the Bush administration, the economy shrank at the rate 6.2 percent. The full result of eight years of Bush Administration policies is a shrinking economy. An economy that is shrinking very, very fast.
So how the hell can Karl Rove, of all people, can sit there and claim that the Obama Administration is going to cause "long-term fiscal damage to the United States?" We are living in the wreckage he created and he is going to lecture us? Stay away from economic policy, Karl. How about you go play with matches down at the local gas station, you can cause less damage that way.

Punking Karl
Well, you do what you can:
White House pranksters wrapped Rove's Jaguar in plastic wrap on the private driveway next to the West Wing. Rove's car is easily recognizable because of its "I love Barack Obama" bumper sticker and the twin stuffed-animal eagles on the trunk. Oh, and there's a stuffed-animal elephant on the hood.
Its not being lead away in handcuffs, but at this point I'll take what I can get.

Gone, Baby, Gone.
Karl Rove to Resign.
We really can't call this resigning in disgrace, I don't think that Rove is going to get indicted for anything next week. Rove faces a kind of creeping disgrace, as his work to create a Republican majority is buried, dug up, staked, burned and buried again.
Still, the man was able to get worst President in American history both elected and re-elected, so his entry in the history books is secure.

Even NASA
From the always must read TPM it seems the Rove and company are fundamentally messing with the Federal Government:
Karl Rove deputies gave GOP campaign briefings to top officials in at least 15 government agencies last year.
Who's vulnerable, who's not and how you can use your agency's resources for the team effort -- that seems to have been the basic idea. Pretty much every department got a briefing. And oddly enough NASA too. That must have been an interesting one.
Look, at some level, every aspect of Government is political. But it occurs at the level of run the Government well, don't mess up, benifit the American People and score political points. Or the opposite.
What is not done is to turn the Federal Government in an extension of the Republican Campaign committees. Staff at Homeland Security should not be briefed on targeted House races. Health and Human Services should not be working to help endangered GOP Congressman. And you don't try to turn NASA into a political campaign shop. Fundamentally, this government needs to be for all people. Rove is trying to turn the Federal Government into nothing more than fodder for his attempts to elect Republicans.

But if the Congress instead uses its own power to arrest recalcitrant witnesses and seize documents demanded but not produced under valid Congressional subpoenas, the situation is reversed. Not only is there no delay, but a judicial refusal to intervene leaves the victory in Congressional hands. If the Sergeant-at-Arms shows up at RNC headquarters with an order to take the servers, is the RNC going to physically resist? I don't think so.
If Congress orders Karl Rove to appear, he fails to appear, and Congress issues a warrant for his arrest, his defiance of that warrant would make him, in effect, a fugitive from justice. Would the President order the Secret Service physically resist the lawful service of a Congressional warrant? In defense of a Watergate-like virtual "shredding" of the emails? I doubt it. It helps that Rove is ludicrously unpopular; Fox News has him at 18% favorable, 37% unfavorable.
You know where this blog stands on the issue.

Fight, Fight!
So Congress and the Administration are gearing up for a good old fashion Constitutional powers fights. Congress want to get administration officials, namely dark master Karl Rove, and Harriet Miers, master of ... not becoming a Supreme Court Justice, to testify on the Hill in an effort to get to bottom of the fired federal prosecutors mess.
The Administration made a laughable offer in which:
"Such interviews would be private and conducted without the need for an oath, transcript, subsequent testimony, or the subsequent issuance of subpoenas."
In other words, Rove will speak to Congress only if he can lie his ass off. Seeing as administration officials have already lied to Congress on this very matter, the Democrats are going to go with a subpoenas, rather than take this deal.
The Administration is going to challenge the subpoenas, and everyone goes to court.
Because the Nixon metaphor isn't complete without a fight over executive privilege.

In today's Washington Post, Karl Rove is already spinning midterm defeat. "1938 was a huge wipeout for the Democrats," he notes. "Do you think that was the end of the New Deal?"
Actually, it was the end of the New Deal: Nothing FDR passed after that came close to rivaling the accomplishments of his first term, in particular Social Security and the Wagner Act.
The end of Bushism as a domestic force will be the clearest victim of a Democratic victory. A positive agenda will be hard to do, but the damage will end.

All I want for Fitzmas...
Is a Scooter. Today is Fitzmas, the day special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's office hands down indictments in the CIA leak case. Now what I really wanted is the head of Karl Rove, which doesn't seem to be in today's package. But Rove doesn't seem to be cleared either. But still, the top aid of the most powerful VP in history is a pretty nice package. Let's take this Scooter for a ride, shall we?

Rumor Mill
Political Nerd that I am, I really have no interest in if Nick and Jessica are breaking up or that Tom and what's her name are having a baby. (Except to note that both Jessica and what's her name are foxy. Wow!) No the kind of rumor that I'm excited by is that Plame prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald was about to indict one or more White House officials in the CIA leak case. Rove apparently hasn't been seen in public recently. So has anybody heard anything?

Kill the King
Karl Rove is the only political story worth talking about today. The key phrase here to remember is "If you are going to strike at the King, you must kill him." Karl Rove is the King of GOP politics today. Marshall Wittmann lays out how important Rove is:
Rove is to this Bush what Lee Atwater was to the father, except more so. He actually created W as a candidate for Governor and then for President. Bush was, and is well aware of how Rove operates. He peddles in gossip, innuendo and rumor to destroy his enemies. Ironically, in this instance he was divulging the truth.
Rove also understands internal GOP politics. It is likely he gave the speech a couple of weeks ago attacking liberals to cement his relationship with the right as he enters this difficult time with the Plame prosecutor. Also, he may be influential in promoting conservative replacements on the Supreme Court to further bolster his standing with the right.
Rove is the nerve center of today's Republican Party. The White House is already lowering the bar for punishment in the Plame case. Unless, the prosecutor has the goods on Karl, he stays. The President and the GOP has no choice. Rove is the closest in Washington to the indispensable man.
If Rove can't be pushed out the back door or go spend more time with his family, then he hast to be defended. That means attacking. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove spoke with at least one reporter about Valerie Plame's role at the CIA before she was identified as a covert agent in a newspaper column two years ago, but Rove's lawyer said yesterday that his client did not identify her by name.
Rove had a short conversation with Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper on July 11, 2003, three days before Robert D. Novak publicly exposed Plame in a column about her husband, Joseph C. Wilson IV. Wilson had come under attack from the White House for his assertions that he found no evidence Iraq was trying to buy uranium from Niger and that he reported those findings to top administration officials. Wilson publicly accused the administration of leaking his wife's identity as a means of retaliation.
This is heavy stuff. Grand Jury, National Security violation stuff. The White House has gone silent. But there were talking before. Big game hunting season is on.

Don't Let Rove Mess with Your Head
And now a word about Karl Rove. Karl Rove, as well informed readers of Craigorian Chant should know, is the dark genius behind the Bush presidency. All kind of dark powers have been ascribed to the man. Democratic mothers tell stories about Rove to keep Democratic kids in line. If you want to read about actual dirty tricks that the man has played read Joshua Green's piece in the Atlantic Monthly. What I am warning you guys about today is that Rove is going to try and mess with your head.

Sunday's Washington Post made me suspect that the Bush campaign really does think things are going poorly right now. Why? Because Republicans are starting to make preposterously overconfident predictions of a Bush landslide.
It's well-known that Karl Rove believes that swing voters like to vote for the winner. Therefore, one of the central political strategies for Bush has been to create an "aura of inevitability" that, theoretically, will bring people to his side. If everyone believes you're a political juggernaut, the theory goes, then you will become a political juggernaut.
Now there is some logic to this. If I know nothing about brands of cake except that lots of people eat cake A and not B then I should pick A. If you know nothing about Bush and Kerry (Not you my loyal readers) then taking your queues from "The American People" might be a good idea. Thus, Rove is trying to make it look like most people have decided on Bush. Don't fall for it. This sucker is going down to wire.
