Lieberman is Done

Having finally pissed every last American Citizen off, be they left or right, Joe Lieberman saunters off into the sunset, a hero in his own mind.

No Kill Switch

I must admit I was rather drawn to the idea of a Presidential Kill Switch. It appealed to my sense of drama, if no my sense of civil liberties. Carry it around like the nuclear football. The nerd hero, the President's personal hacker, storming into the Oval Office "Mr. President, the virus continues to spread. We must pull the kill switch or lose the Country."

Turns out to be a myth.

Everybody Hates Joe

Turns out, being a jerk doesn't make you popular. Joe Lieberman now has a job approval rating of 25% in Connecticut. That's really, really bad, just in case your wondering. 67 percent disapprove of the job he's doing. 19% Approve of the job he's doing on health care.

You know what, I really comforted by this poll. Bad actions should result in bad poll numbers. Joe Lieberman worked very hard to make health care reform legislation worse, for no other reason than spite. That kind of thing needs to be punished at the polls or we will never get better government.

So yeah, voter of Connecticut!

Your Cathartic Moment

Franken denies Lieberman more speaking time:

Maybe a little petty, but at this point, Lieberman deserves all the petty we can heap on him.

Lieberman

Would you look at that, Lieberman is doing his best to stop health care reform. Keep in mind that this is a guy who want John McCain to be President, so in the end it's not surprising that in the end, he tries to screw Obama. The sad fact is that in a Senate that needs 60 votes to pass something, Lieberman is the 60th vote. That gives the man tremendous leverage, leverage which he has been using to both make the legislation worse and to block it outright. It really is an unfair world where the health of millions lies in the hands of one old disgruntled Senator, but this is world we have.

Never Get to Purge

Sometimes its just more fun to be a conservative. They are going to get to have themselves a nationwide purge, while we can't even throw out one little heretic.

A Question

How much do we need to pay Mrs. Lieberman and Mrs. Bayh in order to get their husbands to support health care reform?

Say Anything, As Long as It Hurts

It is as if Joe Lieberman had a chip put in his head, that triggers whenever a tv camera is present, that compels him to say the least helpful thing possible.

Bad Idea

Should not have done this. Mark my words, Lieberman will screw Obama and the Dems before the term is out. On some foreign policy question, right at a key moment, Lieberman with will repay this kindness. I'm completely sure of this.

By the Way

It really is time to toss Lieberman out of the Party. I mean, I know its on our to-do list, and its a long list and all, but its time to move that item up on the priority list.

Best Bad Idea

Dick Morris pitches Joe Lieberman as McCain's VP. Oh Please, Oh Please, Oh Please. The only thing they agree on is the war. The unpopular war. Lieberman will renew all the fears that the right-wing already has about McCain. Lieberman doesn't bring any Dems with him - in 2006 he lost his primary race and won as an independent on the strength of Republican votes.

I totally support this idea.

The Truth Will Out

Joe Lieberman, back when he was fighting for his political life in 2006, was saying things like "Nothing is more important to me than bringing our troops home from Iraq" which is the the kind of thing you say when you don't want the Iraq war to end, but the people who vote for you do. Well John McCain isn't even bothering to tell those little untruths. He is on tape today saying that bringing the troops home from Iraq was "Not too Important." Which is important because it's both true (McCain really doesn't think it's important) and a rather devastating sentiment to express out loud.

Monday Morning Must Reads

SEYMOUR HERSH on US Middle East Policy. Its worse than you think.

Glenn Greenwald on Joe Lieberman. Just as bad as you think.

Ack

This is what drives liberals batty about Joe Lieberman. So a memo gets leaked, and it turns out that even the (soon to be) late great Donald Rumsfeld is saying that we need a change of course in Iraq.

And what does Joe say?

The Rumsfeld memo itself is in many ways surprising. He raises possibilities of doing things such as redeploying our troops which he has always said that he was against. I must say, Bob, that the one thing he doesn't raise as a possibility is to increase the number of our troops there.

That's right, Joe Lieberman is to the right of Donald Rumsfeld on Iraq. He wants more troops. I'm not sure what for, or where they are going come from, but Joe Lieberman wants to go charging in.

Arrggg!

Please

A lot of conservatives are going to start putting out crap about how a win by anti-war Ned Lamont over pro-war Joe Lieberman is going to hurt Democrats. How the donkeys are embrancing George McGovern, that big loser.

Please.

60% of the County now opposes the Iraq war.

We are all George McGovern.

Everybody is going to be against the war. The GOP is going to try and distant themselves from the war all fall. Anybody who tells you different is fooling you.

See. Darwin.

Ha Ha. Faith in the system rewarded. Lieberman goes down. Still, he's going to try and run as an independent and the drama has yet to play out, but he got way far away from the Democratic middle and paid the price. Everyone got used to the idea in the last couple of weeks, but the defeat of a sitting US Senator in a primary campaign is amazingly rare. Historic even.

A bonus housecleaning moment came with the defeat of the nutty Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney in that Democratic Primary. McKinney is an embarrassment (9/11 conspiracies, slugged a cop) that I have no desire to try and defend. And now I don't.

Darwin

I have totally neglected the most exciting political story that will happen this August: the Joe Lieberman primary challenge.

Joe has gone from VP candidate san reproach to failed 2004 Presidential to Bush's favorite Democrat to now being on the verge of being beaten in the Democratic Primary for his Connecticut Senate seat.

This is just the Darwinian process of elections. For all their flaws, elections do a pretty job of weeding out the unworthy. Think of the impala pack chased by the cheetah. The sick and lame are going to get eaten. As are the stupid impala who wander away from the pack. The "sick and lame" in this metaphor are corrupt politicians like poor Bob Ney, who went down today. Lieberman is the gazelle who wandered away from the pack.

Joe Lieberman has wandered really far a field. He is the first democrat to sign on with Bush's proposals and the last to denounce the war. In fact, he hasn't denounced the war. In a country and a political party that has turned completely against the war in Iraq, he still supports both the war and its conduct. And he's about to be punished for it tomorrow.
