This case is highlighting the importance for all people, regardless of age or health, to have some kind of advance directive, preferably in writing. I've never spoken to a single person who expressed a desire to be kept alive in a persistent vegetative state. I have worked in a long term care facility and have seen many well-meaning and loving families go to great lengths to preserve a loved one at all costs, despite obvious suffering and zero quality of life. Just because we can keep someone alive, doesn't mean we should.
