Human Rights Watch

Good job American, light of freedom. Or maybe not:

Four years after the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, human rights are in retreat worldwide and the United States bears most responsibility, rights watchdog Amnesty International said on Wednesday.

From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe the picture is bleak. Governments are increasingly rolling back the rule of law, taking their cue from the U.S.-led war on terror, it said.

"The USA as the unrivalled political, military and economic hyper-power sets the tone for governmental behavior worldwide," Secretary General Irene Khan said in the foreword to Amnesty International's 2005 annual report.

"When the most powerful country in the world thumbs its nose at the rule of law and human rights, it grants a licence to others to commit abuse with impunity," she said.

The world has moved backwards on human rights. They have done so because the United States has moved backwards. Yes we really are that powerfull. And yes we are not doing a good job with that power. You can check out the whole report here.

I wonder if instead of the stories, pictures and film footage of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay that influenced all these nations; that those images were replaced by films/stories of a guy going to college, or a nation giving equal rights to women or practicing responsible agriculture or iodizing their salt or a society not murdering its children or a couple using contraceptives or elected officials not being concurrent members of the military or.......Would the Middle East and Africa (becuase of America's great influence) all of a sudden become healthy, wealthy, competent, peaceful, and wise??? Hmmmmmmm....

I would guess that Zimbabwe (USA or not) would still be a jacked up country committing all all sorts of abuses . For heaven's sake they don't even know how to farm!! And Afghanistan....Hell, would it matter which country was the super power or what they were doing? It would still be a repressive taliban infested criminal country.

I have an idea. Since the USA is so influential, we should start telling everyone about Finland. Because Finland is so great, and America is so influential, if we started pimping out the Finnish way of life, every country in the world would then be rich, happy and peaceful. Now that sounds like a plan!!
