Is Bocce.

The idea of having the ball or balls closest to some object or target in order to score seems to be pretty common. It's that way in curling, too, though the target is painted on the playing area so it cannot be moved during play.

I've never watched bocce, but in curling, the team with the last throw has a big advantage. Basically, that team almost always scores for the round. However, in curling, the teams take turns, so the team that throws last is predetermined. Therefore most of the early throws are, um, throwaways.

I would guess that in bocce, each team tries hard to let their opponents use up their balls first. Is that right?
