Ralph Nader is running for President.

Again.

This is the most worthless action in the history of politics. Either he gets enough votes hurt the Democrat and cause a national calamity (2000) or he gets a humiliating small number of votes and that result is used to dismiss his agenda (2004)

Well played Ralph, well played.

C'mon! Let's say, just hypothetically, that you believe the Iraq war is a bad idea and the US should withdraw ASAP. And let's say further that you don't believe the US should have permanent military bases all over the Middle East. Who are YOU going to vote for? Which of the top 3 candidates represents this position?

And if your answer is Obama, here's what's on his web site:

"Obama will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two combat brigades each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months. Obama will make it clear that we will not build any permanent bases in Iraq. He will keep some troops in Iraq to protect our embassy and diplomats; if al Qaeda attempts to build a base within Iraq, he will keep troops in Iraq or elsewhere in the region to carry out targeted strikes on al Qaeda."

Emphasis mine. Keep in mind that the only reason al Qaeda is in Iraq in the first place is the presence of our troops. The only way to get them out is to eliminate their raison d'etre, which is .... us.

Notice also the phrase "we will not build any permanent bases in Iraq." Nothing about removing the permanent bases already there.

Not much different than McCain, when you get down to it.

Oh come on. If you can't tell the difference between Obama and McCain on Iraq, you need to adjust your reception. You're parsing this way too fine. A few hundred troop left in Iraq after 16 months is not the same thing as keeping 140,000 troops in Iraq forever.

Sure, I can tell the difference between Obama and McCain. I just wanted to see if you were paying attention. And I really liked Obama's response yesterday to McCain - quick and to the point, and in the process tying McCain to Bush, as McCain so rightly deserves.

I would still like to hear Obama say that he will dismantle the bases that are already in Iraq, not just promise not to build any more. If he did that, I might even contribute to his campaign. Let me know if that happens, in case I miss it.

I am amazed at the polls that say that McCain and Obama are about tied in a general election. Rethuglican fear-mongering is obviously an effective tactic, and Obama is going to have to fight hard to beat it.
